The black woodpecker (scientific name: Dryocopus martius) is a large woodpecker with a body length of 45-47 cm, a wingspan of 64-68 cm, a weight of 300-350 grams, and a lifespan of 11 years. It is the largest species of woodpeckers. The whole body is almost pure black; the forehead, top of the head and the pillow of the male bird are all blood red; the female bird has blood red only on the back. It grows in dense forests in the northern part of the Paleo-Northern boundary and has been found in different regions of Eurasia. This bird will not migrate. The flight is unstable, but not as undulating as other woodpeckers. The staple food is ants, which dig large holes when eating.
