On May 22 to 23, Dr. Thomas Casadevall, the volcanic geologists of IUCN and expert of the United States Geological Survey; Prof. Kyung Sik Woo, the volcanic geologists of IUCN and professor of Korea kangwon National University; Hong Tianhua, deputy director of International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the Auspices of UNESCO (HIST); Huo Sijia, the project director of HIST accompanied by Niu Mingguang, the deputy director of Wudaliachi Global Geopark Management Committee; Qu Shigang, the director of Housing Construction Department; Li Hongguang, the director of Tourism Bureau; Zhang Hongwu, the deputy director of Scientific Research and Management Centre have conducted field trips in Wudalianchi Global Geopark. During the field trips, the experts group have gave advices in the field of volcanic geology, science education and infrastructure construction.
On May 22, the experts group conducted field trips in Tourist Center, Laohei Mountain (Volcano) Scenic-Area, Longmen Shizhai (Block Lava Flow) Scenic Area, Wenpo Scenic Area and Medicine Spring Scenic Area, and have gave high evaluation and fully affirmation on the geopark’s protection work and sign system for geological heritage.
On May 23, the experts group have made an exchange meeting with geopark’s Housing Construction Department, Scientific Research and Management Center, Land and Resources Bureau, Scenic Bureau, Tourism Bureau, Planning Bureau and Environmental Protection Bureau. During the meeting, the experts talked about their feelings of Wudalianchi and gave some advice for future development. The experts emphasized that compare with oceanic plate volcanoes, Wudalianchi’s volcanoes are very unique because its formed from intraplate movement. Moreover, the experts group also carried on a depth discussion in relevant issues of global geopark, biosphere reserve and IUCN. Meanwhile, the experts group hope that Wudalianchi’s new museum would highlight local geology, humanity and folk-custom history, pay more attention on scientific popularization for primary and secondary school students and establish more interactive project for the masses and tourists. At the end of the meeting, both sides exchanged souvenirs.
The visit of experts from IUCN and HIST will play an positive role in relative work for Wudalianchi Global Geopark in future.
