Formation Background of Volcanic Barrier LakesRelease date:2020-10-21

Volcanic barrier lakes were created when lava spewed by Laohei Volcano and Huoshao Volcano blocked the original river. See the following process diagram :

1. This was an ancient river before Laohei Volcano and Huoshao Volcanoes erupted.

2. Lava flowed south during early eruptions of Laohei Volcano. The river was blocked and cut into the First Lake and the Second Lake seen today, and a large area of lakes in the north .

3. During late eruptions, lava from Laohei Volcano flowed to the north and east. The river was blocked, giving rise to the Second Lake seen today. Meanwhile, a lake was formed in the location of the Third Lake and its north area seen today.

4. When Huoshao Volcano erupted, lava flowed to the northeast, blocking the river and creating the Third Lake, the Fourth Lake and the Fifth Lake.
